SOME OTHER DISTINGUISHED DESCENDANTS OF ALLEN AND FANNY LEWIS ENO ROBERT EDWARD BERTRAND
One of our most beloved cousins -- loved not only in our family but by people whose hearts he touched all over northern Connecticut -- was Robert Edward Bertrand (1934-2001). Bob was a son of Joseph Edward Bertrand (1900-1947) and Mattie "Margaret” Eno Bertrand Doering (1910-1990). A corporate executive until his retirement, Bob spent most of his life on the ancient Eno turf of northern Connecticut, where he was active in civic affairs and municipal government in Windsor Locks. A U.S. Air Force veteran, Bob was a grandson of DeEarlon T. and Charlotte Crowell Deming Eno, a great-grandson of Luther and Emeline Trask Eno and a great-great grandson of Allen and Fanny Lewis Eno. But it wasn't because of all this that Bob captured the hearts of so many. Combining a sweet-spirited, outgoing personality with an abiding love of children and Christmas, Bob was literally renowned as Santa Claus! Donning the red suit at the beginning of the season, Bob not only served as Santa at the Enfield (Conn.) Mall, but was a common sight at nursing homes and charitable functions, bringing cheer to many who otherwise would have had none. When he visited his elderly aunt Bernice Landers Eno, the latter noted how neighbors would come to their doors and cry, "Hi, Santa!" Bob left joy wherever he went. Our cousin Paul F. Eno recalls: "I was devastated when Bob died, but I must say that his funeral was the most unusual I have ever attended. It was more like a family get-together. Everywhere I went, people were gathered in groups, talking about things Bob had done for them." Somehow we don't feel that Bob has gone anywhere! His beloved wife, Sula, and their children and grandchildren are among the most active members of our family group! |
