FAMILY ORIGINS AND GENEALOGY As with most families, the earliest origins of the Enos are the stuff of conjecture. One problem is that surnames (last names) as we know them didn't develop in Europe until the 15th century so, unless somebody wore a crown or was well documented in historical writings, it can be difficult to tell who was whom. Another problem is that written records usually get sketchy before that because of wars, fires and other disasters. At various times since the 15th century, the name has been spelled Henno, Hennot, Henne, de Henner, Enno and finally, around 1700 in America, Eno and Enos. Because of a few high-class marriages by Enos, we can reliably trace ourselves back to such big cheeses as Charlemagne, William the Conqueror and King Edward III, but only through maternal lines. That's true of many old New England and Virginia families. See more about this in Eno Connections. As for the earliest Enos themselves, there are three prevailing opinions. 1. NORMAN: In the 9th century, after they got tired of terrorizing the world but before they got their second wind and decided to conquer England, a large group of Vikings (Northmen) settled in what is today northern France. The name "Northmen" became "Norman," and the area the French bribed them with became "Normandy." Among the descendants of these folks, supposedly, was a fellow named Henno, who later fought in the Crusades. Snippets about him have filtered down in a few branches of the family. He was supposed to have been a knight, but any soldier who owned a horse was generally considered a knight in that period. The few modern Enos who know about this Henno (who may or may not have existed) generally consider him the first of the family. To this day, we find Henno family members in Normandy and surrounding territories. This is the family line that Henry Lane Eno (1871-1928; not an Allen/Fanny descendant) seems to have connected us to while researching our roots in Europe, not long after World War I. Henry was a well traveled author, teacher and an experienced researcher. His book The Eno Family: New York Branch (1923) has been considered the definitive source for early Eno geneaology. In the 1970s, Rev. Robert B. Eno (1936-1997; a great-great grandson of Allen/Fanny), himself a well traveled clergyman, author and professor, retraced some of Henry's steps in northern France, Belgium and England, finding nothing to contradict HLE's findings. 2. GERMAN: A theory favored by Paul F. Eno (1953-), Robert's brother, is that we are descended from the pre-Norman Aino and Henno families of Frankish Germany. There are Hennos all over modern Germany, Paul says, and it's possible that ancient Hennos spilled over into Scandinavia, where their descendants became Vikings and, later, founders of the Norman Henno family. The Franks, German in origin, started moving into what is today France and Denmark as early as the 5th century. So, Paul believes, our earliest ancestors were Franks who moved north into Scandinavia or west into France, or both. 3. ENGLAND: There is an English Eno family that has long been established, especially in the County of Lincolnshire, but now spread throughout the country. From the 15th century on, the name there has been spelled Enoe, Ennew, Henowe, Inneu and Inno. Rev. Robert Eno reported meeting some Ennews in England in the 1970s who said they had the same French connections Henry Lane Eno said we have. Evidently, from what Robert could learn there, at least some of these English Enos are descended from the same ancestor we are -- the Huguenot refugee who fled to England from France in the 1500s. (See Jacques de Hennot below.) There is another Eno family in the County of Hampshire. Its spelling variations include Enoch, Enock, Enoke, Enocke, Enochs, Enos and others. This family later spread to Cornwall, where they appear on tax records as early as 1182, when a Robert filius (son of) Enoch held estates there.Douglas Richardson, author of The Eno and Enos Family in America (1973), now reportedly believes that we descend from one or another of these English families rather than from the exiled Huguenot. We are not aware of what evidence he has to support this. THE WRITTEN RECORD BEGINS Despite what we're told is Richardson's opinion, it is generally accepted today that the modern Eno family in America is descended from one Collard Henno (c. 1440-?) of Mons, capital of the ancient county of Hainault or Hainaut in Normandy. Most of Hainault is now part of Belgium. It's hard not to notice the similarity between the names "Henno" and "Hainault," but whether the family took its name from the region, the region took its name from the family or it's all just a coincidence, we know not. The first known written record of the family came about when Collard, apparently some sort of official, appeared on the guest list of a meeting of burghers (local officials) in Valenciennes, Hainault, on February 7, 1463. Robert believed that Collard was a fat cat with one of the powerful merchant or trade guilds prevalent in Europe at the time. Collard's son Jacques Henne (1476-?) was 'Prevot,' presumably royal governor, of Valenciennes under King Charles VIII. And Jacques' grandson was the swashbuckling Jacques de Hennot, (1540-c.1631), a public official who fought for the Huguenot (French Protestant) cause, keeping one step ahead of the Roman Catholic authorities. Jacques was the one who fled to England around 1568, after the Second War of Religion, which tore up the Hainault area pretty well. The English, fellow Protestants, welcomed him and other Huguenot refugees with open arms. It was Jacques' grandson, James Enno (1625-1682), who left London for Windsor, Connecticut, in 1648. James is well documented as having been baptized at the Huguenot Church, Threadneedle Street, London. Click here for Collard's line of descent to ours. There is no debate about the line of descent from James Enno to David Eno II (1726-1789), and there is overwhelming circumstantial and anecdotal evidence that we are descended from David II, but which of his two sons was Allen's father has not been established. Until recently, the prime candidate was Elihu Eno (1754-1820). In his book, Richardson says that Elihu is most likely Allen's father. There is no record, however, of Elihu ever having married or having children. Unless there was something physically wrong with him, this would have been extremely unusual for a man in the late 18th century. Allen's mother is well documented: one Sarah Hays, born in Simsbury in 1769. According to this theory, Elihu married Sarah and brought Allen -- and perhaps others -- into the world, but the records have been lost through fire or other mishap. All we know about Elihu comes from a few deed records. In 1790, he deeded land in Simsbury to a Job Case. The same year, he himself was deeded land from a John Moses. Elihu is mentioned in the 1820 federal census (p. 265) as living in Simsbury. Most recently, however, Jacky Paul Marek, daughter of Emaline Eno Paul, has gotten into the town vault at Simsbury, Connecticut, and uncovered some startling new evidence. According to these records, Allen Eno was the illegitimate son of Sarah Hays and an unspecified "Enos." This chap owned up to it, so the child was named Eno. This was the case with the two other men who had children by Sarah, who obviously wasn't the town's best role model. Critically, the record specifies that the Enos in question was married and had a family. So much for Elihu. Paul Eno now believes that Allen's father was Revolutionary War veteran David Eno III, who lived and is buried -- all by himself -- in East Granby, Connecticut, less than a mile from his presumed grandson, Luther. David moved from Simsbury to East Granby at one point, and it could well have been to sidestep the scandal over Allen's birth. There is still some debate in the family as to whether this Allen is our Allen. Richardson and Paul Eno believe he is. Jacky Marek believes there is another Allen and that Sarah Hays wasn't his mother. Research continues, and we will update as information comes in!
